State Bank of India statement analyser: Excel in, ITR-ready report out
State Bank of India statements have two famous quirks: descriptions prefixed with TO TRANSFER and BY TRANSFER, and an 'Excel' download that is often not a real Excel file underneath. Greenote Lite is built for both — it reads the .xls-that-is-actually-text files OnlineSBI and YONO typically produce, and decodes the slash-separated UPI descriptions into a party ledger and ITR summary.
How to export your State Bank of India statement as Excel or CSV
- 1Log in to OnlineSBI (or YONO) and open the account statement section for the account you need.
- 2Choose the statement period — for a full financial year you may need to download in chunks, depending on the portal's range limit.
- 3Pick the Excel or CSV download option, not PDF. If the saved file shows a format warning when opened, that is normal for SBI exports.
- 4Upload the file unchanged. There is no need to re-save it as a 'proper' Excel file first.
Menu names shift between netbanking versions, so treat the steps above as a guide — the constant is the format: take the Excel, XLS or CSV download, not the PDF. Greenote Lite does not read PDF statements; the full Greenote desktop app (coming soon) will.
What Greenote Lite does with an SBI statement
SBI's format is the one that breaks naive parsers most often, so the engine carries specific handling for it:
- The .xls files SBI portals generate are frequently HTML or tab-separated text wearing an Excel extension. The engine detects and reads these directly — the file-format warning Excel shows does not mean the file is corrupt.
- TO TRANSFER and BY TRANSFER prefixes hint at direction, but the debit and credit columns are treated as the source of truth, so a mislabelled row can never flip a payment into a receipt.
- UPI descriptions in the TO TRANSFER-UPI/DR/reference/party/bank/VPA/remark shape are split on their slash segments; the party name and VPA are kept, the reference noise is dropped.
- Terse rows such as ATM WDL, CHEQUE and interest credits are mapped to cash withdrawals, cheque transactions and interest income respectively.
The download is a four-sheet Excel workbook: a party ledger of who paid whom, every transaction categorised and named, a category summary, and an ITR summary with AIS/SFT flags. See why the party ledger comes first or the full statement-to-ITR workflow.
SBI statement questions
Almost certainly not — SBI's portals typically export a text or HTML table with an .xls extension, and spreadsheet apps warn about the mismatch. Greenote Lite reads these files directly, so upload the original download without re-saving it.
Both typically work. The two can differ slightly in columns and date formats, but the engine detects the table layout rather than assuming one fixed format. If a particular export does not map cleanly, send it via the contact form and a real person will look at it.
As hints, not truth. Direction comes from the debit and credit columns; the prefix and the rest of the description are used to identify the mode (UPI, NEFT, cheque) and the counterparty for the party ledger.
